Peder Hvelplund - MF, Enhedslisten's plan for the indoor climate in schools

Valdemar Østergaard

We have asked member of parliament Peder Hvelplund about what those in Enhedslisten will do for the indoor climate of schools after this general election.

What is your and your party's long-term plan to improve the indoor climate in Danish primary schools?

"Repeated studies have for more than 10 years documented huge indoor climate problems in primary schools. Since 90% of all students sit in classrooms with too high a CO2 level, it is a very extensive task to solve the problem. Single initiatives do not do it, and Enhedslisten proposes therefore, that a national action plan be drawn up that obligates the municipalities to make concrete decisions about how and in which order they will solve the problems. At the same time, we propose that the legislation in the area be tightened. where it does not exist today, and there must be more precise supervision and maintenance requirements. The changes can be based on experiences from, among other things, Sweden, where the indoor climate problems are far less than in Denmark."

In 2009, 2014 and 2021 there has been a focus on the indoor climate in connection with the mass experiment, where it has been proven that the indoor climate is far too bad - Why has nothing been done about it yet?

"Enhedslisten has raised the indoor climate problems with changing governments since the first mass experiment was carried out in the school area in 2009. We have done this, among other things, by reviewing and supporting the resolution proposals of other parties, and at the latest in May 2022 we had called the Minister for Children and Education into consultation. Unfortunately So far it has not been possible to gather a political majority that will actively do something about the indoor climate problems."

Why has budgeting for improving the indoor climate not been a priority in the Norwegian Parliament?

"Enhedslisten has long advocated and concretely proposed that the area be prioritized. Why a majority of the parties did not want to prioritize an indoor climate effort, they themselves must explain, but it is probably connected to the fact that a solution to the indoor climate problems is considered to be very expensive ."
