Welcome back! Summer vacation is over

Valdemar Østergaard

This week, it is the Danish primary school pupils' first days at school after the summer holidays. Start the year off with the SKYEN CO2 meter and feel the benefits on the indoor climate right away.

The summer vacation is over, and all students return to school today after a long and well-deserved summer vacation. The brain has had a break, but it is important not to forget the good habits at school!

Eat your vegetables, exercise and most importantly – remember to ventilate.

It is more important than you think, and there is a greater need for it in school than you think!

The Norwegian Working Environment Authority has made recommendations for 12m 3 of air per person in the workplace. In the school, however, there are neither requirements nor recommendations about this in the classroom.

Can it really be true that the indoor climate is more important in the workplace than in school? Surely it is after all in school that we create the future generation and knowledge bank? Has anything even happened since 2009?

Actually not a big deal... So instead of leaving it up to the system, we will have to take responsibility and action ourselves. There must therefore be a change in behavior among the students and the teachers themselves.

Behavior change and education

As a teacher, are you in doubt how to remember to vent while at the same time maintaining peace and order among the students? We have written much more about this in a blog post about ventilation in the classroom here . It's simple - just with the CO2 meter SKYEN, which lights up red and blue when the indoor climate is bad or good, which is a sign to get the air out.

In addition to the SKY, ÅBN also offers a behavior kit, "Heroes of the Air", which precisely helps to include the students in the ventilation. In addition, we have developed a teaching material, "Air for Learning" for 4 lessons in the subject Nature & Technology for the primary and intermediate levels, which also teaches students about ventilation and indoor climate - and the importance of this.

The summer holidays are over, but even when the children are not at school, they need fresh air.

There must also be airing out at home. Although the children may play outside a lot during the summer when the weather is good, it is just as important when the children sleep. In a study done by Bolius, they show that simply leaving the door open until the room during the night can significantly lower the CO2 levels and make a huge difference to the indoor climate.

Already 2 hours after the children have been put to bed, the CO2 level has exceeded the recommendation of 1000 PPM, and during the night it increases by up to 5 times the recommended level. However, if you look at the CO2 level during the night while the door is open, it is a completely different matter. In fact, it never exceeds 1000 PPM during the night. See the entire study here .

In addition to the Heroes of the Air and the teaching material, it is the SKYEN that can make a difference in the school.

SKYEN is a CO2 indicator, and is already in place in 58 municipalities to help all schools achieve a better indoor climate.
